Ocean Jasper, also known as Orbicular Jasper, is a very rare variety of Jasper. This mineral is made up of silicon dioxide and is characterized by its circular “orb” inclusions. It forms in a beautiful variety of colors including vibrant greens, yellows, burgundies, mauves and teals banded together with spherical inclusions that are formed when silica is precipitated out of magma, forming the unique pattern of this rare mineral. Ocean Jasper is only found in place in the whole world, which is why it is so rare, the only place this mineral has been found is the northeastern coast of Madagascar in the Mahajanga province. 

The history of Ocean Jasper is a bit of a mystery, the first notation of its existence was made by Alfred Lacroix, a French mineralogist, in 1922. But soon after his discovery no one could find any trace of the mineral for over 75 years until in 1999, Paul Obenich began searching the coast of Madagascar, trying to find the elusive mineral. Only when he factored one of the most important elements of the coast, the low tide, did he finally find the long lost mineral. He debuted his discovery at the 2000 Tucson Gem and Mineral show and the stone has become a highly sought after specimen ever since!
