The scientific name is Salvia apiana. Native to the Southwestern U.S and Northwestern Mexico, this fragrant bush is used mostly for smudging. People tend to think of smudging as a Native American ritual but this ritual is being practiced throughout the world. Sage is the most well known smudging herb today. When smudging there are four basic steps.
1) Declaring the intent- Example “My intent for this ritual is to clear the negative energy”.
2) Invocation- In which you invoke the help of any form closest to you (angels, spirit guides, nature beings) light smudge stick, face each direction while gently waving the smoke and keeping your intention in mind.
3) Clearing- you do this by walking a path through the area you’re clearing, keeping your intent in mind and gently waving the smoke.
4) Blessing and protection- For yourself, your home or any specific item or situation. Extinguish sage stick and spend some time by yourself to allow energy, in you and the area cleansed to settle.
