Malachite is usually found in opaque green masses, its color derived
from copper, as a secondary mineral. Found in the vast rainforests of the
Congo in Africa; the moisture allows copper to oxidize most easily into
the surrounding stone. Chatoyant (fibirous) crystals are too small for
faceting, but the light bending quality leaves one in awe. The massive
material can be carved or polished in many ways to reveal the alternating
bands of light & dark green. In the past, malachite was worn to ward off
danger & illness. Exhibition of botryoidal “eyes” formation, the layers
represent an introspective stone.
